A lot of cheap Wi-Fi plugs and bulbs are the same thing inside, made by a company called Tuya with a store’s logo on the box. When the store drops its app, the plug still works and Tuya’s servers are still up. You just need a different app.
What to do
- Check if it’s Tuya. If setup had you scan a QR code, if “Tuya” or “Smart Life” shows up anywhere in the app or its fine print, or if its setup Wi-Fi was named something like SmartLife-XXXX, it probably is.
- Install Tuya’s Smart Life app and add the plug like it’s new. For most people that’s the whole fix.
- If you’d rather it not depend on anyone’s servers, run it through Home Assistant with LocalTuya. You’ll need each device’s local key once, and LocalTuya can fetch it if you make a free Tuya developer account.
Schedules you made in the store’s app are gone, so you’ll have to set those up again. If your plug turns out not to be Tuya, this won’t help, but tell me what it is.
